Alistair Speed Memorial 50 (incorporating CTT Scotland Championship & SVTTA Championship (H Roberts Trophy))
Chris Smart (GTR - Return To Life p/b Streamline) delivered a commanding performance to claim his fourth win of 2025 at the Scotland District and SVTTA 50-Mile Championship on 3 August 2025 in Fife, clocking 1:45:51. Christina Mackenzie (Stirling Bike Club) secured the women’s title with 2:08:08, marking a triumphant return from her 2022 accident, in an event organized by Fife Century Road Club.
The WE50/01, a 50-mile out-and-back single carriageway circuit starting west of Ladybank, featured headwinds out and hilly tailwinds back, with standing water from pre-race rain adding trickiness to turns. Smart led a GTR podium sweep, finishing over seven minutes ahead of teammates Rob Graham (GTR - Return To Life p/b Streamline) (1:53:18) and Marc Anderson (GTR - Return To Life p/b Streamline) (1:54:02). “This is a super result for GTR with a 1-2-3,” Smart said. “I’m proud of Rob’s first solo medal. Conditions were super windy, but the sensations were good—I was determined to win in memory of Hulk Hogan!” His focus now shifts to the North Lancashire Time Trials Association 100 on August 31.
MacKenzie edged Lorna Breetzke (Elgin Cycle Club) ( 2:08:22) by 14 seconds, with Margaret Mcmillan (Deeside Thistle Cycling Club SCIO) ( 2:18:02) third. MacKenzie’s victory underscores her inspiring comeback from a serious road accident in September 2022, breaking her pelvis in two places.
In the SVTTA age-adjusted time category, Smart topped with 1:44:53, followed by Liz Ball (Edinburgh Road Club) Liz Ball ( 1:48:22) and Angus Wilson (Dundee Thistle) ( 1:50:21).
The championship highlighted performers across age groups showcasing endurance. In the open field, Chris Smart (AG 40-44, 44) led overall, while Marc Anderson (AG 45-49, 47) took third. Keith Murray (Darlington Cycling Club) (AG 50-54, 50) topped his band with 1:54:55, Angus Wilson (Dundee Thistle) (AG 55-59, 55) won his with 1:56:27, and Ian Dobbie (West Lothian Clarion) (AG 60-64, 61) led with 2:05:37. Robert Cowie (Aberdeen Wheelers) (AG 65-69, 67) claimed his band with 2:07:06, William Bunyan (Team Andrew Allan Architecture) (AG 65-69, 68) followed closely, and Iain Elliott (West Lothian Clarion) (AG 75-79, 75) won with 2:20:13. Stewart Mitchell (Deeside Thistle Cycling Club SCIO) (AG 85+, 85) impressed with 2:47:11. For women, Margaret McMillan (AG 60-64, 61) topped her band at 2:18:02, Miriam Rennet (Kinross CC) (AG 60-64, 63) next, and Liz Ball (AG 70-74, 72) leading hers with 2:26:34.
Smart, with wins at the Steve Donaldson Memorial 10, Bob Taylor Classic 25, and Scotland District 10, eyes the (North Lancashire Time Trials Association) NLTTA 100. MacKenzie’s comeback continues to inspire, with her focus on building strength for future races.
The Scotland District 50-Mile Championship, organised by Fife Century Road Club, unfolded on the WE50/01 course, a 50-mile out-and-back starting west of Ladybank, heading north to the A91 through Gateside and Burnside, turning at Yetts of Muckhart, and returning south to Heatherhall. Heavy pre-race rain created tricky conditions, but the event celebrated strong performances across categories.
