Chippenham & District Wheelers 25

This year’s event delivered a fantastic turnout, with 60 riders taking to the start line - including 9 late entries - bringing us right back to pre‑Covid participation levels. The field offered an excellent mix across categories: 35 time trial bikes, 25 road bikes, 46 men, 14 women, 18 seniors/Espoirs, and an impressive 42 veterans. We also welcomed 8 qualifying teams, adding even more depth to the competition.

Conditions were close to perfect. After a week of intense heat, the day settled into light overcast skies with barely a breath of wind. Surprisingly, despite the favourable weather, no course records fell this year.

At the sharp end of the race, the ongoing West District rivalry between Jake Sargent and Rob Francis continued to deliver drama. On a lumpy 25‑mile course, Jake edged out Rob by just four seconds - a remarkably tight margin over that distance. Team Bottrill were the clear winners in the team competition, showcasing their strength in depth.

The event was supported by the club’s usual dedicated volunteer crew, but it was especially heartening to see three new club members, who don’t time trial themselves, step forward to help. John was introduced to the joys of marshalling an over‑signed roundabout (and kindly returned every sign), while David held firm at a clearly marked left turn - even if two riders still asked which way to go. Their enthusiasm added a real boost to the day.

A lively atmosphere filled the HQ afterwards, with most riders staying on for the prize presentation - a welcome return to the social buzz we’ve missed in recent years. The event also marked our first use of CTT Live, meaning the old macro‑driven spreadsheet can finally enjoy a well‑earned retirement.

A special moment came with the awarding of The Harry Hunt Memorial Tankard, presented by Harry’s daughter. Congratulations to Jake Sargent, this year’s deserving recipient. The trophy commemorates Harry Hunt’s extraordinary 165‑mile ride in 12 hours back in 1895 on a “pneumatic cycle” - a remarkable feat that continues to inspire.

Overall, a superb day of racing, strong fields, smooth organisation, and a brilliant atmosphere. Here’s to the next one.
