News & Features
Over the past couple of years, we've been building a strong community of female time triallists in the CTT North East district. This has grown through our dedicated Facebook page, which now has over 170 members.
Participation numbers reflect this progress: last season, 14 female riders completed the N&DCA Best All Rounder (BAR), up from 7 in 2024. There's little doubt that female riders represent a key growth area for Cycling Time Trials (CTT), especially with the rising popularity and awareness of road bikes in time trials.
Insights from Our Community
We've used the Facebook page to gather valuable research on what helps encourage women to participate. The feedback highlights clear preferences:
Female riders tend to favour quieter, shorter, and medium-length rural courses.
They prefer to be positioned consecutively at the start of the open field, rather than in a separate female race.
Our most popular local course, the M12s, has consistently attracted around 20 female riders in recent years.

Upcoming Event: Female-Only "Come and Try" Charity Time Trial
To further boost female participation in time trial events, Blaydon Cycling Club is organising a Female-Only "Come and Try" Charity Time Trial on 26 June 2026.

We've been inspired by the huge success of Kernow Racing Team's similar events in recent years – particularly their 2025 event, which drew 60 riders. We're aiming to exceed that number and potentially set a new Guinness World Record for female participation in a cycling time trial (pending ongoing discussions with Guinness World Records).
The event is open to all female riders, and we've already seen strong interest from local non-TT cycling groups. We're optimistic it will attract many newcomers to the discipline, just as Kernow's event did last year (where 20 of the 60 entrants were not affiliated club members).
All proceeds will support Newcastle Women's Aid, a local charity providing specialist services to women and girls affected by domestic violence and abuse.
