Dan Blackburn (VC Norwich) stormed to victory at the Diss & District CC 25-Mile Time Trial on 3 August 2025, clocking 53:22 to claim the open title in Norfolk. Denise Hurren (Hashtag Coaching) topped the women’s event with 1:02:01, in a race that saw strong performances across categories despite varying winds.
The B25/17, a 25-mile out-and-back route starting outside Roydon on the A1066 and heading west to Thetford, featured a headwind outward that tested riders' pacing. Blackburn, surprised by his win, edged Simon Butteriss (Ely & District CC/B&T Motor Repairs) (54:26) and Lee Shipp (Diss & District CC) ( 54:26) in a joint second. “I was really surprised to take first when I saw I was only one second quicker than last season,” he said. “This was my first 25-mile TT of the year; the sunny, warm conditions with a south-westerly headwind outward made it challenging.”
Hurren relished the rolling course, finishing ahead of Charlotte Smith (Newmarket Cycling & Triathlon Club) ( 1:05:07) and Sarah Roan (Total Tri Training) ( 1:05:16). “I like this course—having not ridden it for seven years, it was good to compare,” she said. “With ladies hot on my heels, I had to give it a good go. The rolling terrain suits me as I’m small, unlike flatter power courses.” Mark Marris (Royal Navy Cycling (RNC)) led the road bike category with 1:00:42 (10th overall), while veteran Chris Nudds (CC Breckland) posted 1:06:37.
The event celebrated depth across age groups, with Age Group categories (40+ in 5-year bands) highlighting endurance. In the open field Dan Blackburn (AG 45-49) led overall, while Simon Butteriss (AG 45-49) and Lee Shipp (AG 45-49) tied for second. Mark Ash (Ipswich Tri Club) (AG 45-49) took fourth with 55:29, and Richard Camp (Kings Lynn CC) (AG 50-54) led his band with 55:31. Lee Garrod (Hashtag Coaching) (AG 55-59) topped his with 1:01:02, and Steven Neill (Kings Lynn CC) (AG 55-59) followed.
For women, Denise Hurren (AG 60-64) dominated, with Charlotte Smith (AG 45-49) in second. Sarah Roan (Senior) rounded the podium, while Suzy Esser (Beccles Tri Club) (Senior) and Abigail Bremner (Hashtag Coaching) (Senior) added competitive times. Rita Rue (West Suffolk Wheelers) (AG 60-64) and Janice Nottingham (Diss & District CC) (AG 60-64) showcased veteran strength with 1:24:06 and 1:24:10 respectively.
Blackburn, marking his first win after a runner-up at the VC Norwich 10, looks to build momentum. Hurren, enjoying the rolling terrain, thanks Diss CC for a great event and hints at more races ahead. Their successes underscore the appeal of this classic Norfolk time trial.
The Diss & District CC 25-Mile Time Trial unfolded on the B25/17 course, a 25-mile out-and-back starting on the A1066 outside Roydon, heading west to Thetford, and finishing near the start after a U-turn. Sunny, warm conditions with a south-westerly headwind outward added challenge to the rolling route.
